| Japanese Reed Doors
Sliding reed doors were used in Japan during the hot summer months to replace shoji screens and solid doors. The reeds allowed cooling breezes to circulate while providing privacy. On the door shown, the reeds are carefully arranged so the darker areas form a wave pattern. They are held in place by horizontal strips of bamboo. Generally designed so they are light in weight, they are movable, interchangeable, and were used to regulated light and airflow and create mood. The aura created by them is one of calm. In European houses they work beautifully as sliding cupboard doors, as room dividers or as wall accents (as shown here). Each one is individual in terms of size, design and colour.
